The Roskamp Institute Memory Clinic in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is pleased to present an update on current and upcoming treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. This presentation includes an overview of research presented at the 2008 Alzheimer's Association International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders (ICAD) in Chicago. This is a FREE event and open to the community.

This lecture is a part of the Alzheimer’s Association-FGCC caregiver training series & support group. The First Baptist Church of Plant City caregiver support group will begin right after the lecture. Community members are welcomed to stay and participate in the group.

Accessing the most up-to-date research and evidence-based practices, you will develop a clear understanding of dementia, depression and delirium. You will be able to differentiate between the conditions by recognizing risk factors, signs and symptoms. Your role in providing appropriate care to the person and aspects of the diagnostic process will be discussed.

Educational conference for family and professional caregivers and anyone interested in learning about dementia.

Conference objectives: describe current medical research, recognize the hidden gifts of caregiving, identify each individual's gifts, learn to schedule a successful day, explore new strategies for caring, and discuss different dementias. 10/17/2008 8:45 AM - 4:00 PM   Support Group Leader Training: New York, NY
Support Group Leader Training in October & November for health care professionals and former caregivers who are interested in leading caregiver or early stage groups. This 28 hour training opportunity is held on four consecutive Fridays. The training incorporates both didactic material with experiential group learning and includes a medical overview, interviews with early stage patients and family caregivers, an overview of services offered by the NYC chapter, as well as lectures and articles about group theory and techniques for group leadership. It has been approved by NASW - New York State for 22.0 contact hours under approval number A-915. Monthly supervision groups are also available to new leaders, as well as to group leaders who are currently leading groups here in the Chapter office and in the community. Support Group Leader Training Workshop Dates: Oct. 17, 24, 31 and Nov 7.

The Alzheimer’s Association, MA/NH Chapter is starting a new support group for siblings of people with young onset Alzheimer’s disease. This group will meet via telephone in the evenings. The guest speaker on the call will be Dr. Richard Mayeux of Columbia University. Via a conference call, Dr. Mayeux will talk about the genetics and risk of Alzheimer’s and his work with siblings of people with young onset Alzheimer’s.
The event is free but space is limited so please reserve a space to receive the toll-free number and a passcode to call in to the talk.

This 4-hour CEU workshop deals with helping the resident with dementia have a pleasant dining experience by teaching the front line staff the importance of proper nutrition, identifying resident difficulties, identifying causes of and approaches for challenging mealtime situations, and encouraging independence. It also describes the social needs of residents and provides tools and techniques for ways to get to know and have meaningful interaction with residents at all stages of dementia.

The Basic Training seminar is designed for professionals and former family caregivers who want to become facilitators for Alzheimer caregiver support groups.
